Camp Casey on the Quad (CCQ) is a week-long event -- hosted by students at Regis University in Denver, Colorado -- from Tuesday March 14 to Sunday March 19, 2006. Our inspiration comes from Cindy Sheehan’s vision at the original Camp Casey in Crawford, Texas in the summer of 2005.

*

We, the organizers and participants in CCQ, stand against the war in Iraq and call for an immediate end to this war. Our camp is a symbol of opposition to what we consider to be a military effort done in our name yet without any moral foundation whatsoever. We offer this symbol on campus to create a conversation around what has become a taboo subject: our responsibility as U.S. citizens to question our government’s policies and decisions. Much of the inspiration behind this effort comes from the Jesuit Mission of Social Justice, which calls us and reminds us to speak truth to power. Our effort rests upon Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message of nonviolence and the courage that he showed in 1967 to speak out against the war in Vietnam, and of the connections he made between war and oppression. We reach out for support, in the spirit of peace and nonviolence, across the Regis community, to begin a conversation that leads to the heart of the war itself and to our responsibilities as citizens.

*

The mission of Regis University is to encourage students to think critically about the question “How ought we to live?” CCQ will invite Regis students, faculty, and staff – as well as community members from Denver and our surrounding areas – to do just that, in a context of openness, optimism, and other-centeredness. Whatever your views on these issues, we invite you to participate in this important conversation.
